2. Questioning, Due Tues. Sep. 29th

Step 1- Read all the comments from the previous assignment.
Step 2- Choose one comment which is thoughtful.
Step 3-

First, paraphrase the comment you are responding to: For example: “Ms. Leong thinks that…”

Then, write a question about the chosen comment. The question must be: clear, sincere, useful and be the sort of question which leads to more questions. The question you write must complicate the comment’s argument, make the reader of the comment you are questioning think deeper. Stir up some intellectual trouble.

  1. Erica Lopez thinks that since the president had spoken out and made a speech about a major topic, it must be important. If an issue pops up, you figure out a way to solve the problem. Any issue has to be kept in mind, but no one listens because they are unmotivated. Parents, teachers, peers, or anyone else can have the job of motivating students, not always the president. My question is "Why does it need to take the president to point out an issue for it to be important?"

  2. Erika Lopez thinks that one of the greatest challenges of our generation is too much technology. She says that kids spend too much time on the computer and watching television, which leads them to forget about their homework, and is also one of the main causes for obesity, due to the lack of exercising.

My question is, "Is too much technology the actual problem , or is it really the lack of discipline on the part of the user, that too much time is spent on the computer and television?"

  3. Dena Samad says that people along time ago did more to help the neviroment then we do today. I don't think that's true. The damage has already been done many years ago there were nuclear explosions left and right. We did so many things bad for the enviroment and weren't thinking about the earth. Now at least we know what we're doing and trying to put a stop to it.
My question is "Did we do more to help the enviroment back then than we are doing in 2009?"

  4. Erika Lopez says that one of the many challenges in our world is too much technology. She says that too much technology is a bad thing especially for young people because many kids spend too much time watching television or going on the computer for too long. That leads to them forgetting their homework and doing badly in school.
My question is “Is it really the technologies fault or the children’s brain function that makes them spend most of their time on the computer or TV?”

  6. Nicole Agaronnik stated that preventing drug and alchohol abuse is difficult in our generation. Nicole thinks this because more teens are getting introduced to drugs and alchohol every year. The only way to stop one of these major crisis's is to get a good education. Education helps you to succedd in life.
My question is "How do we, the people of America, stop substance abuse?"

  7. Erika Lopez states that one of the many challenges in our generation is the use of technology by students. In most cases, this shouldn’t be a bad thing, but it is. The kids are not watching TV to watch the national geographic channel, and they are not using their computer to do research. They just sit there, on Facebook or MySpace, and they are not exercising their brains. Things like this make children forget to do their homework and, sometimes, they even forget what they learned that same day. They fail tests because they do not study for them, and their parents keep telling them to work harder, and study harder. The kids realize what they are doing wrong, and many say that they will try harder.
My question is, “Why do the students, after their parents scolded them and they promised to do better, do not change their habits of spending to much time in front of the TV or computer?”

  8. Rina Gershman thinks that the most important challenges of today are drug and alcohol abuse by teens. I agree with her, because many children are turning to drugs and alcohol to calm them down. Most kids are being abused at home, are depressed, or have low self-esteem. When they turn to drugs and alcohol to feel better, they are making their lives a little worse. With drugs and alcohol kids will begin to fail in school, resort to violence, or want to perform suicide.
My question is, “Why should teens resort to alcohol and drugs if they can go to many people that they trust or believe can help make them feel better, such as guidance counselors, aunts, uncles, or any other family members or friends?”

  9. Erika Lopez realizes that too much technology is a bad thing, especially for young children. I disagree with that inference because technology, not only may it have an affect on our nervous system but we learn from it. When you make a mistake on sitting on the computer or watching television for a long time, you learn from that mistake when you find yourself,"Not yourself." Not every child sits on the computer for hours. Some children actually learn from different web sites and information that is on the computer. You might say that children would be better off with reading books, but as technology increases so does time which happens to have new concepts. A book doesn't have everything, but a computer or television might continue the lastest news. You wouldn't know what is happening in the world if you didn't watch television. Obesity may be caused from too much children not moving, but how do you know if they don't exercise after they go on the computer or before? My question is to you, "If you think that children shouldn't watch television or go on the computer, how will we know about the latest cures, weather or even global warming?

  10. Erika Lopez said that one of the main problems in the world is too much technology. kids are spending too much time on the computer and watching TV instead of doing their homework or doing something productive. Computer and TV are also one of the causes of obesity.

my question is "Even though kids are being told to do their homework and exercise, they arent listening. is it the amount of discipline and support that the parent gives their child that affects their child's progress and work in school and at home?"

  11. Michelle Zak had said that the country is in an economical crisis and many people in the USA are losing jobs just because the companies can’t pay them for their hard work. I believe that one of the causes of the economical crises is that not all people worked hard enough before. Although the companies still gave them many bonuses and high salaries. That lead to the companies having a crisis and they are now not able to pay money to the good and hard workers. I think that people have to learn from their mistakes and now work harder to bring the economy back up and prevent this from happening again.
My question is “Are the companies really not having enough money because of the crisis or was the crisis caused by a serious lack of hard work with a poor management of money?”

  12. I woul like to comment on Erika Lopez's comment.Ms.Lopez stated"there are many challenges in my generation:global warming, too much technology, and the recession".My main question or "piggy back" is how much technology is too much?Should students be denied computer use in school?Should teachers demand handwritten assighnments?Do the pros of technology outweigh the cons or vice-versa?These are important questions we should all be asking ourselves.

  13. Mitchell Eng states that lack of motivation to achieve and low school spirit are some of the challenges of our generation. I can understand lack of motivation because it causes students to get low grades, but low school spirit? My question is... if you have very good grades but but little to no school spirit, what are the negative outcomes?

  16. Alyssa Natividad said that students nowadays lack motivation which is the cause of their bad grades. Students rarely study or do their homework, and when they receive poor grades they think of it as no big deal. In my opinion, each student is responsible for their actions. If they choose not to focus on studying and doing well, it will only affect their future.
My question is “If a student has been failing for a long time, their teacher is bound to notice. The teacher can try to help the student get their grades up, but isn’t it up to the student to decide about whether they listen to the teacher or continue failing?” Adults may try to help kids, but it will only work if the students themselves want the help.

  17. Erika Lopez stated that too much technology is bad for young people. She thinks children spend too much time on the computer or watching television instead of exercising. I agree with Erika. Children should start getting active more and exercising. But is it really technologies fault? Also, I believe that the leading cause of obesity is the diet of the children. If they eat healthier, they won’t be obese even if they watch television or go on the computer for too long.

My question is, “Is technology to blame for children not exercising, or is it the fault of the children and their parents?”

  18. Genie Gorbonosov said "I believe the challenges our generation is faced with right now are the number of distractions kids experience from different games systems, computer games, and watching TV. Because the world is getting more technologically advanced it is preventing kids from doing their homework and exercising daily."

My question is "Is technology really preventing kids from doing homework and exercising daily, because there are lots of programs that help them with their and homework and help them to learn? Also, ever since the first gym was created, more people have been exercising on the treadmill, bicycle, etc, than ever before.

  19. In his comment, Mitchell says that students slacking off and staying healthy are the two main problems in this generation. Kids and teens today are not living a healthy lifestyle and are not studying hard enough for school. My question to Mitchell is “How can we get kids to be healthy and study more without taking away the video games and making them eat only carrots?” In other words “How can kids have some fun while being healthy and doing well in school?”

  20. Nicole Ginzburg believes that laziness is the main challenge of our generation because of technology such as computers, televisions, game systems, and more. She says that students are too lazy to focus on schoolwork and homework when they may have fun with electronics. She also said that the declining economy and school budget cuts are part of the issue. I agree with Ms. Ginzburg on the effect of technologies in distracting students from paying attention to schoolwork and homework. I disagree that some of the blame can be because of the dropping economy and school budget cuts. Students didn’t focus enough on schoolwork and homework because of distracting technologies even before the economy started dropping and there were school budget cuts. Therefore my question is, “How does the dropping economy and school budget cuts play a role in students barely focusing on schoolwork and homework because of distracting electronics?”

  22. Alyssa Natividad thinks that one of the challenges of her generation are the school budget cuts. She thinks that schools are unable to pay for activites such as dances because schools cannot affored to waste money on them. My question to her is, "If schools were spending money on those activites, what was the point if they were just a waste of money? Also, since when do dances help students learn?"

  24. One of the things Evelyn Rivkind thinks, is that students lack motivation and do not try as hard as they should at school. As a result of this, it's hard to get good grades. Sometimes, students don't have their parent's assistance for school-like purposes such as studying for tests or help with homework. This also leads to bad grades. I personally think what Evelyn is trying to say is true. This is happening very often, and needs to be stopped.

My question for her though is, "Aren't there other ways to improve your grades, other than asking others for help? Is it absolutely neccesary to rely on others? Maybe it's something the student has to change about themselves to work up to and get better grades"

  25. Dena Samad says that people before us have took care of the earth and the enviroment better than we do today. I disagree with her because before, people didn't realize the changes that were happening to earth and they didn't try to prevent them. Now though, we know what is happening so we are trying to stop it, and prevent it.
My question to you is, if people took care of the earth back then better than us, then why are we left to clean up this mess that is happening to the earth called global warming?

  26. Mitchell Eng thinks that in school, there is not enough motivation, and school spirit to inspire students to work hard in school. Even though there is not enough motivation, or school spirit, shouldn't students work hard even without motivation.
My question is, even though there is not enough motivation, shouldn't students work hard either way?

  27. ERika Lopez states that there is too much technology in our generation. It is true that staying on the computer for a really long time is bad for you and can cause bad grades. Instead of studying or doing homework they go to the computer or television. My question is that even though students know that using the computer for too long can affect our school grades, why do they just keep going on the computer so much and why can't stop being addicted to the computer or television?

  28. Erika Lopez states that too much technology is an issue in our generation. Students don't get enough exercise and they get distracted by the latest pieces of technology. Later on, students tend to forget to do your homework and don't get a good homework grade.

My question for Erika is "Is technology the main reason why students don't make the right choices for themselves?"

  29. Amanda Varvak thinks that "the economy these days isn't so great. Taxes are being raised and everything is costing so much more. Because everything costs so much more, people spend less, which causes the taxes to go up."
My question is this: What reason do you think the costs of things are increasing?

  30. Erika Lopez states that too much technology is an issue in our generation. My question is what would the US be without any technology? How would we be doing this web log? Is it technology's fault for kids not exercising?

  31. Genie Gorbonosov thinks that one of the greatest challenges of our generation is how kids do not do their home work properly and they don’t get enough exercise because of the new technology that is being produced daily. Technology such as game systems, computer games, and watching TV make it tempting for kids to play. Also the economy is low, and it is hard to get a good job. The job market is very competitive and the people with the most knowledge have a better chance for succeeding.
My question is how does technology such as a computer affect a child's homework? Some activitys on a computer are very educated. Also, what would the adults and kids do without all of the technology that we have?

  32. Jonathan Sperling stated that he thinks one of the most important issues in society today is global warming. He states that even though it may not have affected our parents, it can affect our lives and the lives of our children. He also thinks that the economy is a major issue. He says that even tough we are young, we are the next generation of working people and citizens, and we have to think about the economy and try to help any way we can.
My question is, can we really stop global warming? Can we make every person on the planet recycle, use less energy, and “go green”? even though if everyone pitched in, we could save our planet, do we really believe we’re capable of that?
