9. During a lesson Natalie asked, "Who cares?" Good question. Should we care about the Jefferson Era? Due Fri. Feb. 12th

How are events from the early 19th century relevant to our lives today? In other words, will studying 1810 prepare us for facing 2010? Using your notes from our Philadelphia Street-Fair and facts from the textbook answer the question by making specific connections to the topics we've studied to prove your point.

Be critical, use logic and double check your reasoning.

  1. By studying 1810, it does help us to prepare for 2010. The War Hawks were people who did want war against Great Britain. This event was when war strategies were needed to win. These war tactics and strategies may be used by army generals for future battles of 2010. Also, steam power may be used again as a form of transportation and even an energy source for powering buildings. We may have to look back on how steam power was used because today, due from burned fossil fuels and other materials, there is global warming. Steam power does the same role as fossil fuels, except that the end product of steam power is water vapor, instead of carbon dioxide emissions. Finally, there was the yellow fever epidemic that hit Philadelphia. By studying how the yellow fever was spread, it gave awareness of how and what to stop this virus. Many past studies have made the future better, even if the events were from years ago.

  2. The past is very important to the present. We can look back at the mistakes made many years ago and compare the decisions we make now to them. Why does this matter? Well, we wouldn't want to make the same mistake twice, now would we. Things like the Yellow Fever, War Hawks, The Shakers, etc., all teach us something about the different parts of the world and how it was back then, and it's always possible to retrace it back to the things we must face nowadays.

For example, due to the years of studying the Yellow Fever, people now know how to cure it and other diseases like it. Also, because of Hamilton's Economic Plan, we now know much more about the world of business and the economy.

  3. We should study the Jefferson Era because it will prepare us for facing 2010. Some events in the 19th century are mistakes that we should never repeat and others are events that guide us through our lives today. For example, the war doves have shown us that there is another way to fight a battle. They didn’t fight with fists, but with words. Also, yellow fever was a big epidemic which keeps scientists today thinking of a cure. Hamilton’s Economic Plan is a topic worth learning because it was a very controversial event in the 19th century. Hamilton had worthy enough ideas that some are part of our capitalist economy today. The protoindustrial revolution started a big chain of inventions and advanced technology. It expanded the industries and started the industrial revolution. Some of the inventions made at that time are still used today. All of these events in history are part of our lives today, or have taught us lessons. This is why we must study the 19th century.

  4. History repeats itself. Ideas from 1810 are connected to the ideas of today. Hamilton’s Economic Plan was designed to help people pay off debts after the revolutionary war. This is very similar to Obama’s stimulus plan to help boost the economy. The Proto-Industrial Revolution was started to help with the production of cotton. Today, with the advancement of technology, life is made easier with inventions like the internet, cell phones, I-pods, etc. The War Doves were a group of people who did not want to go to war with Britain. They felt that disputes could be settled without physical fights. In present day, the people have the UN (United Nations), where representatives present their cases and try to work out their disputes without bombing each other first. The Yellow Fever was a serious epidemic in 1810, where infected mosquitoes spread the disease to people, and today we have West Nile, which is a virus carried and spread by mosquitoes too. Lewis and Clark were two explorers who went where no man had gone before and mapped out the routes to the West. We are studying stars and planets where one day we will time travel and live in outer space. Science fiction you may say but reality one day. Therefore, studying the past and learning from our mistakes, we are able to improve and move forward. In addition, studying the past allows us to learn what worked and propel us to create a better tomorrow.

  5. The reason we should study 1810, so that we do not repeat history. If we do not study the past, there is a chance for us to make the same mistakes they did. For example, if we did not study about Yellow Fever, then after the epidemics went away, then we it struck again, we would have to learn the method of treatment again. If Lewis and Clark's map of the west had not been studied, the United States might not have been able to expand west. In other cases, we might not have been able to study certain things because of the level of technology, but after technologies got advance, we could study it, like traveling in space, or to space.

  6. We should care about the Jefferson Era because even though though history is a thing of the past, the events that occured in 1810 are still important now in 2010. The events that happened back in 1810 are the reasons that we have the laws and technology we have now. Also, we should study the history of the Jefferson Era so that we know what not to do. We can learn about the mistakes made, and make sure not to do the wrong thing.
For example, without major diseases like yellow fever, we may not have had the cures and vaccines that we have today. Even though the yellow fever took the lives of many, we researched, we experimented, and we found out ways how to protect ourselves from it, and how to help people who have the disease survive it. This proves the quote, "You can learn a lot from your mistakes," is true. Also, because major transportion like the Erie Canal and the Cumberland Road were built, we now have better forms of transportation that help us get where we need to go easier and faster.

  7. By learning about the Jefferson Era, or 1810, we can prepare strategies in order to face 2010. Many of the significant events that happened in the beginning of the nineteenth century helped our country develop throughout the years to become what it is today in 2010. One topic such as “James Madison for Re-Election” explains to us how America received an important document called, “The Bill of Rights”. We follow these rights to this day and this is what our government is based on. Without the Bill of Rights, our country would not have a democracy or equal justice to each citizen. Another topic such as “The Yellow Fever” brought up questions about this infectious disease like how it is transmitted, if it can be cured/prevented, and what are its symptoms. In 2010, doctors and scientists study the epidemics of this disease, such as the epidemic in 1810, to create vaccines and medications for this disease in order to prevent another epidemic from happening and to save many lives. One more topic such as “Hamilton’s Economic Plan” provided a plan on how to overcome the financial crisis by paying of debts that were encountered by America during the Revolutionary War and a new banking system to make the economy better. Now in 2010, in the time of world-wide economic crisis, we still can use his idea of the banking system to create a plan to stabilize the American economy and to make it the strongest economy in the world. As it is seen, studying the Jefferson Era, or 1810, will prepare us for facing 2010.

  8. I believe that studying 1810 will prepare us for facing 2010. The reason is that some things happen in history and come back later on in life. That means that by studying and learning about these things, we can find a cure, victory, etc. For example, in 1810, the yellow fever epidemic hit Philadelphia. Now, there haven’t been any yellow fever epidemics because we learned and studied about the disease and made a vaccine to stop the disease. Another thing is the War Hawks. They wanted war with Britain in 1810. Because of them, they gave ideas on how to fight the British. We studied and learned about these ideas and came up with better strategies, weapons, and armor. The Proto-Industrial Revolution is also one because we learned all about the inventions made and modified them to make better and useful inventions. That is why I believe we must study and learn about the 19th century.

  9. Studying the past can help prepare for a better future. After all, those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it. By studying 1810, we will be able to learn from mistakes and failures to help create a brighter future. People can study the mistakes that were already made in order to help the twenty-first century avoid making them. In example, the yellow fever was an epidemic that hit Philadelphia. It caused many deaths and some people were forced to flee. Scientists were able to study this epidemic to stop people from getting it today. They were able to create a vaccine, and the yellow fever is no longer unstoppable and life-threatening. Another example is the War hawks. Unlike the doves, they were not pacifists. They wanted war with Great Britain. Their strategies can be used in 2010, and in the future. Studying the past is important and can influence our future positively. Studying the past gives us advantages and benefits today, from vaccines to war methods.

  10. Much of history has affected and changed the ways we live today. The people today now have the advantages of all the wonders that people in the Jefferson Era created. In the Jefferson Era there were the explorations of the West with Lewis and Clark, The Proto-Industrial Revolution, the invention of steam power, and much more. The expeditions of Lewis and Clack allowed us to have a map of the routes to the West. The Proto-Industrial Revolution allowed an easier way to make cotton. This has helped us quite a lot in today’s world. Without the formation of factories, and an easier way of production, we would not be able to produce all of our products and supplies as quick and as efficient as we do. The invention of steam power in 1810 was a big deal back then, and has helped us in making many things, such as tea, and a quite handy object that has helped the world over many years since it was created, the steam engine. In 1810, the creation of steam power, proto-industrial making, maps of routes to the West, or anything else such as the yellow fever epidemic, which has helped us to come up with medication to help cure diseases, were fantastic in helping us today. Almost all of the new technologies we have created were transformed from the adventures and creations of the people during the Jefferson Era. So learning about this time long ago, does help us in understanding how it is relevant to our lives today. The Jefferson Era was filled with adventures that would last a very long lifetime.

  11. I think that it is important to study the Jefferson Era because we can learn from things that happened in the past. For example during the Proto-Industrial Revolution we were able to invent machines that could produce cotton much more efficiently than by hand. This helps us in the year 2010 because now we can use the machines in factories to produce goods that we need. The invention of the cotton gin helped form new ideas which led to better inventions. This is one example of why should study the past in order to improve the future. Other example would be Alexander Hamilton's economic plan. This definitely led to improvements in society today. Alexander Hamilton came up with the idea of a banking system that we still use today and without studying this we can never come up with new ways to help our economy. My last example of an event in the Jefferson Era that has helped us today would be “Yellow Fever”. “Yellow Fever” is one of the worst epidemics that we have had in America. It killed many people in Philadelphia because the doctors didn’t know how to treat it. Today we have learned from this terrible crisis and now know how to deal with and epidemic like this if it were ever to happen. We have grown from the past and we are preparing more for the future. The only way that we can grow as a world is to learn from the mistakes of the past. Without studying the Jefferson Era history may have been repeated twice and we cannot afford for this to happen. Studying the past helps us to prepare for the worst as well making the world a better place for future generations.

  12. Studying the life in 1810 will prepare us for facing the year 2010. We benefit from their progress and 1810 taught us a lot of lessons. For example, steam power is very important to the 2010 community and we use it for numerous things. Without steam power, modern travel wouldn’t have been as fast as it is now. Another example would be the Yellow Fever Epidemic. The Yellow fever epidemic is the spread of the disease called yellow fever. It killed a lot of the population in Philadelphia and got the people really worried. The scientists worked on a cure for five whole years and finally created a cure that could treat the disease. This taught us never to give up on what is important to us. The War Doves found more than one way to fight. They didn’t use force and aggressiveness, they protested whatever they thought was wrong. This is an example of following your heart. The cotton gin in 1810 helped speed up the production of cotton. This is important because we use cotton for many things, such as clothing, hats, blankets, and many other things. Lastly, Hamilton’s Economic Plan is also an important part of history. He helped pay off national loans, made banks, and created Republican and Federalist parties. Our government today still uses the ten dollar bills and the coinage that he made. We also still use many of his ideas and strategies for our banks today. All of these example, allow us to understand how the year of 1810 is relevant to our life today, in 2010.

  13. I believe that studying 1810 (Jefferson Era) because many events occured 200 years ago that still affect us or help us today. For example, Alexander Hamilton's economic plan created banks and helped pay off national loans. Today in 2010, we still use the system of banks and if those loans were not paid off, we would probably be in a much greater debt. Also, today, the land of Canada might be part of the U.S. but it is an independent country because a group called the War Doves stopped the War Hawks from creating a war between Britain and the U.S. The Yellow Fever epidemic was a huge crisis in Philadelphia that killed thousands of people and it was one of the reasons that Philadelphia did not remain the capital. However, this epidemic helped us figure out how it is transmitted and now, we have a vaccine for it. Without all of this knowledge of the past, there could be a repitition of history. Studying the past can keep us safe and may create a brighter future for future generations.

  14. Studying 1810 can help us prepare for 2010. There were many events that occurred in 1810 that helped with the growth and development of America. We have made many mistakes during the Jefferson Era and by learning about them; we can prevent ourselves from repeating those same mistakes. The events that happened in 1810 guide us through our everyday lives and remind us to build upon every incident that occurs. For example: when the Proto-industrial Revolution took place, cotton machines that helped with the production of cotton were built and they made a pathway for the Industrial Revolution. Yellow Fever had also attacked Philadelphia during the Jefferson Era and scientists are now more aware of the causes and preventions because of the epidemic. Hamilton’s economic plan had solved some of the U.S. economic problems in 1810. The War-doves had also taught us that a war can be won without weapons, just words. These events prevent us from repeating any silly incidents and help us build upon the inventions that were created to make 2010 a better year. Therefore, by studying 1810, we will be prepared for the challenges we shall face in 2010 and we will not make the same mistakes as we did in the past.

  15. We should depend on what we learn from the past to help us with the present. Studying the Jefferson Era, or 1810 will benefit us in 2010. We will learn from the mistakes we made in 1810 and it will help in the growth and development of America today. If it weren’t for the War Doves, Canada could have been part of the United States today. Steam power and the proto-industrial revolution provided a pathway for future inventions. Steam power was used for transportation and we use cotton in so many things. The yellow fever epidemic provided awareness for this and other diseases. It gave us some insight with medicine and maybe because of this we have cures for many diseases. Hamilton’s economic plan helped us with the economy and understanding how money should be dealt with. Even though all of this happened two hundred years ago, it can still benefit us today.

  16. The past is always vital for the future. The past helps us prepare for the future. Knowing about the past can help cure diseases such as yellow fever or help even make peace with countries such as the war doves did.

For example, because of the epidemic of yellow fever that started in 1793, we now know more about it and how to prevent it. Another example is that Hamilton's economic plan heped the US government with the economy and how to handle money.

  17. People should care about the Jefferson Era. It will help us face for 2010 and the future as well. Some events in the 19th century lead us to today and will still lead us on to the future. Even the mistakes that happened in the 19th century guide us until today.Hamilton’s Economic Plan is a significant event in the 19th century that helped people go through some financial crisis'. Hamilton had ideas that are part of our great economy today. “James Madison for Re-Election” explains to us how America changed when, “The Bill of Rights” was written. We follow these rights to this day and this is what our government is based on. Without the Bill of Rights, our country would not have a democracy and wouldn't be the same. “Yellow Fever” is one of the worst disease that ever struck America. It killed many people in Philadelphia because technology and medicine wasn't advanced. We have learned from this disease and how to deal with an epidemic like this if it were ever to happen again. Inventions from the Pro-industrial Revolution have been expanded and advanced. Studying the past helps us to prepare for the 2010 and the future. Making the world a better place for the future as well.

  18. I believe that the early 19th century is very significant to us today. From the past, we learn new things and discover how the world came to be today. The past also helps prepare us for 2010 and many more years. For example, the War Doves. They have shown us that there are two sides to a war and that there are other ways to fight in a war. The Doves fought with words and not actions. They have taught us that wars are more than guns and physical fights. The Yellow Fever has inspired us to come up with new vaccines and new cures to diseases that we fight with today, such as the H1N1 flu and cancer. The steam power engines that were created in the 19th century have inspired us to move ahead and develop new things such as electricity. I actually do believe that studying the 1810’s will prepare us for facing 2010.

  19. I think that we should care about the Jefferson Era. By looking back we can build on people's past mistakes, past successes, and past events. For example, the yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia brought awareness to the true danger of yellow fever. Now we know more about the disease and can partially treat it. Another example would be the War Doves. They decided not to be punching bags and fought for their rights. Now, Canada is not part of the U.S. because of them, and they taught us that there is more than one way to solve a dispute. That is why studying the Jefferson Era is important.

  20. The Jefferson Era is important and we should always study the past. The reasons I think we should study the past is because the past helped create the future. For example the Shaker's helped spread religion in the early 19th century and they helped give orphans homes, food, love and the shakers also invented many useful things that may have inspired other invetors, people to improve upon the idea. They are important to today because they are an example of "freedom of religion" and they are still here today. We should learn from the past to make sure people don't make the same mistakes and so we can be inspired.

  21. Studying 1810 prepares us for 2010 beacause we can learn from the mistakes we made and copy ideas that have succeeded. For example, when Yellow Fever struck Philadelphia, we tried some cures before success, and now we have cures that succesfully treat yellow fever. When the shakers started successfully making a lot of the fundemental things we use today. We copied their ideas and created more advanced versions and even new items. We should learn how to look at the past, learn from their success and failure, andbe more careful with the choices we make today

  22. Studying the year 1810, did prepare us for facing 2010. By looking at what happened in the past, we learn from our mistakes and become stronger from it. We can make sure the same thing that happened years ago, won’t happen again. Like the yellow fever. It was an epidemic that hit Pennsylvania. Many people suffered and died because of yellow fever, but they soon found the cure for it. Another example would be the War Hawks. They were a group of congressmen that wanted war with Britain. It gives us ideas on how to fight Britain, as long as new strategies and tactics. From the events in the past, we get prepared for what awaits us in the future.

  23. Studying for 1810 will preapre us for 2019 because we will see how much we have advanced in the past 200 years. We can also change anything that we felt had gone wrong in the advancing process. Many great ideas were invented in the 19th century, and it's important to know who came up with them and how. An example would be the War Doves. They prevented a war with Britain over Canada, which would have caused a lot of deaths. Canada could've been made part of the U.S if it wasn't for them. Another example would be the Yellow Fever. by studying it, we have come up with medicine to treat the symptoms of it, saving a lot of people from pain.

  24. The Jefferson Era was significant to 2010 because we can learn from their mistakes. It is preparing us for our future. History does repeat itself, and we must learn from the mistakes of the failures of thepeople in 1810. For example, the yellow fever came along and killed many people in the Jefferson Era. But now, doctors know how to stop this and it won’t be an epidemic. Another example is that we still use some of the War Hawk and Dove techniques. Also, people should use the inventions that were made in 1810, and expanding on them for better use. We always use steam power, canals, and from that we learned new ways of transportation and new passages through America. We should study the 19th century so we could be prepared for anything.

  25. The Jefferson Era is still very important to today. History almost always repeats itself. What if we don't see it coming because we forgot our history? If it England attacks again. What if another great depression occurs. If we know our history we can see it coming and prevent it. We must also learn from our mistakes as well. There were many epidemics in the Jefferson era. Now we know better than to go and touch things and people while we have contagious diseases. Doctors have also learned to cure diseases by studying the past. So now you see the The Jefferson Era is still very important to today. History almost always repeats itself. What if we don't see it coming because we forgot our history? If it England attacks again. 26. We need to study the events happening in 1820 to help us solve problems now. What’s the point of learning from OUR mistakes when we can learn from someone else’s? The quote “if we don't learn from history, we are doomed to repeat it” completely makes sense. Our country and the world as a whole has learned so much about governing people, and in general running a country from looking back at the things occurring thousands of years ago. Alexander Hamilton’s economic plan helped today’s society with banks. He created the idea of a banking system that is a huge part of the economy today. The past is essential for knowing what to do with the future. Cavemen I suppose had a horrible government, if any, due to the fact that they have no previous knowledge or any idea how a government should be run, and how to treat their people.
